Opened in 1983, the Miami Children’s Museum stretches over 5500 square meters (60,000 square feet) and has plenty to offer visitors, especially children. All exhibits are specially designed to stimulate children’s curiosity and to encourage them to play and learn. There are over 14 galleries spread over 2 floors and they offer exhibits such as a giant piggy bank to teach children about money and a Music Makers Studio to encourage children to learn about music and musical instruments. Exhibits are adapted for children of different ages, from babies to toddlers to children aged 10 or older. The modern museum has been designed with families in mind and provides everything you need for a day’s entertainment. There’s plenty to see and do on your self-guided visit, and if you’re hungry you can call into the onsite Subway restaurant for lunch or a snack. Educational toys, books and games are for sale at the gift shop. You may also be able to catch an educational event at the museum, such as a workshop, art class or show. The Miami Children’s Museum is an accessible venue and has been designed to welcome visitors with many kinds of disabilities with ease and comfort. There are 8 dedicated accessible parking bays in the parking garage and the whole building is wheelchair-accessible, including the elevators, bathrooms, exhibits and water fountains. Visitors can also borrow one of the two adult-sized wheelchairs onsite or one of the lightweight folding stools. Visitors with visual impairments can use the Braille, large print guides and the museum sound map and sighted guide tours can be provided upon request. Visitors with auditory impairments are accommodated with closed captioning on all virtual programming and videos, and sign language tours are available upon reservation. Service animals are welcome onsite and visitors with cognitive impairments can visit the museum’s multi-sensory room, which can be adapted to suit individual needs. Sensory drawstring backpacks containing headphones, fidget devices and other tactile objects can be provided upon presentation of ID.
