No trip to Paris is complete without touring the Louvre, so make time for a self-guided visit during your trip.

The Louvre was originally a palace but became a museum during the French Revolution. It first opened in 1793 and houses a collection of treasures from around the world. It stretches over 3 wings, with 4 floors per wing, with many other side rooms. Parts of the foundations of the building are also open to the public too. If you were to visit the entirety of the museum, you would travel more than 12 km (7.4 miles).

At the Louvre, you can expect to see da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, and there are many works by famous French artists. Other collections include furniture, ancient scrolls, antiquities from Egypt, Greece and Rome, and over 7,500 paintings, with works by Italian and Dutch masters.

Despite the historical nature of the setting, the Louvre is fairly accessible for visitors with disabilities, and museum staff are very accommodating. There is an elevator to the main entrance, and there are many elevators and wheelchair lifts within the building. Accessible parking spaces are located near the main entrance, and visitors can borrow folding chairs, wheelchairs, hearing loops compatible with audio guides, and rubber-tipped canes free of charge for the duration of their visit. People with disabilities enter free of charge, and can bring a guest with them free of charge also. Museum staff are available to help people with disabilities navigate to a particular collection. Accessible bathroom facilities are situated beneath the Louvre pyramid and inside the museum.
